Anonymise photos and videos in real time, locally on device. Nothing sent to the cloud.
Anonymous Camera is a privacy-first camera app for activists and journalists that uses AI to seamlessly anonymise faces in photos and videos, locally on device.
My Role
I worked on all aspects of getting the product off the ground, from product development to marketing and working with investigative journalists.
Challenge
Our faces have never been more vulnerable. Facial recognition algorithms make it easy to identify individuals from a single snap - a fact that’s particularly relevant at a time of protest. We wanted to create a product to help activists and journalist preserve the identity of the their subjects when capturing footage on the ground.
Solution
Anonymous Camera is an app that uses machine learning to identify people in images and videos and then blur, pixelate, or block out entirely faces or whole bodies. All AI is run on the users device - ensuring the users data privacy is protected.
Outcomes
We won an IF Design Award in 2021, have over 100K downloads with high usage in areas of conflict, and were featured in publications such as The Verge, Wired, and 9to5mac.
Powered by state of the art machine learning: it is designed as a tool for journalists, whistleblowers, researchers, and activists who need to record sensitive information while protecting themselves and their sources. In an age of growing facial recognition use, this app helps you resist against the erosion of our right to privacy.
